Flaming Cigar, aka Doba, is my wonderful 10-year-old mare. She's quite level-headed and a really quick learner, but I just don't have the time I need in order to put her to work and truly get her finished and competitive. She's fairly solid on the barrel pattern, but will definitely need some more fine-tuning on poles, and fine-tuning on the barrels wouldn't hurt either. She has only ever competed in small local play days, but it's been 2 years since we've gone, just because life and college have gotten in the way. The only problem that I've noticed personally in owning her for the 4 years I've had her was loading in the trailer smoothly she's done better recently but I never had it focused as part of her training, she will get on it eventually but it's more of a leap into the trailer than it is a smooth step up into it. Sometimes you have to get behind her a little just to encourage a forward movement instead of her going to the side of the trailer, definitely does better in a bigger stock trailer than anything else, but she sits great when inside and unloads perfectly. And she had a head injury after jumping into a small trailer about 2 years ago, so occasionally, if not worked with for a while, she can become a little head shy when removing the bridle and bit, but otherwise does just fine with saddling and will take the bit no problem when getting her ready to ride. She stands well at trailers, hitching posts, and fences. She stands great for the farrier and has no problem with picking up her feet in any way. She can become a little watchy when it comes to tarps and flags, but she has never sat back or taken off while being ridden or tied. She has only ever thrown me one time, and it was when I kept her in a stall for a couple of weeks/months while dealing with her head injury, and I just neglected to lunge her before I got on to ride on a nice, cool winter's day. She has never bucked since and has never reared or bitten anything or anyone, nor attempted to. Overall, she aims to please and just needs someone who has the time to put into her so she can unlock her true potential. She's got some speed to her, and once she knows what she's doing, I know she'll be great at her job, but with that speed, she also has a great stop. She also does well on trail rides. I just want her to be loved and cared for the way she deserves to be. She works mostly with leg pressure, and I personally use spurs to get a little bit of a quicker reaction, but she doesn't necessarily need them. I keep her outside in a pasture with three other horses 24/7, and she's always been a little bit more on the dominant side, but nothing crazy. She is very mellow for the most part. She is very easy to catch when in the pasture; she will just stand there as you walk over to her and wait until you clip on the lead rope, and lead her out to groom her and saddle her up.
