Bag of Fantasies (aka “Shorty”)

Handy youth suitable
Roping prospect, started on barrels/poles

Shorty came off the track in 2022 from Wide Open Race Horses with 10 starts and made his way to Indiana. I purchased him after he’d been with a trainer for approximately three weeks here in Indiana. He has been with me since but due to weather in northern Indiana and no indoor arena, he’s been a little slower to start on a new career.

He is athletic and broke nicely to ride but we do not see eye to eye on a pattern, partially due to arthritis in my back that does not allow me to sit in the way I need to. Been patterned on barrels and poles and has a really nice, natural weave on the poles. Truly believe he could be a top-notch pole horse with the right rider.

Responds to bit and leg pressure, good brakes, soft to ride. Walks in and out of the arena quiet. He hauls like a dream and has been hauled all over northern Indiana to open shows. Will stand tied to a trailer by himself all day long with no issues. Stalls fine, but does best with turnout. Not buddy sour. You can leave him home alone too. Stands for the farrier. Doesn’t require anything special for diet and will stay fat on air. Not fazed by a whole lot. We shoot guns and fireworks off at home and it doesn’t bother him. He’s a nice horse to be around. Very affectionate. Currently turned out with two other geldings.

Would be suitable for an EXPERIENCED youth. My 10-year-old son started riding him in the last two weeks (see videos) but isn’t sure he wants to ride two horses, plus it leaves mom with no horse! He can be watchy, but is not reactive. He’s not dangerous but can be bullheaded at times. (I mean, he is an ex-racehorse!) If your kid can ride, they can handle him.

Dr. King of King Veterinary Services (Indiana) did fluoroscopy on all of his legs/feet in the spring of last year and saw no issues other than we did decide to inject his lower hocks and did that again this spring with our primary vet from CK Equine. Hocks were not terrible at all, but we wanted to stay ahead of any issues. Teeth done yearly, feet done every 6 weeks, regular body work.

He needs someone who can help keep him accountable on a pattern, drive him through his turns, and not get in his way too much. I’m too nitpicky plus my body does not cooperate. I think he could also excel in the roping, breakaway, or goat tying world. He’s not real big, but he’s very stout. Would also make a nice flag racing horse due to size and speed.

The videos do a pretty good job encompassing what level I have been able to get him to. He’s not had much speed added to him on the pattern yet. The ones with my son show their first or second attempts at a pattern.

PPE welcome at buyer’s expense. He will not go to just anyone. He doesn’t have to go, and I want to see him be somewhere he can be successful.

More videos available upon request.
